BARLBY HIGH SCHOOL IS PART OF

PSHE

PSHE

Aims of the curriculum

At key stage 3 the curriculum aims for students to build on the knowledge and understanding, skills, attributes and values they have acquired and developed during primary school. The PSHE curriculum at Barlby acknowledges and addresses the changes that young people experience, beginning with transition to secondary school, the challenges of adolescence and their increasing independence. It teaches the knowledge and skills which will equip them for the opportunities and challenges of life. Students learn to manage diverse relationships, their online lives, and the increasing influence of peers and the media.

At key stage 4, students deepen their knowledge and understanding, extend and rehearse skills, and further explore attitudes, values and attributes acquired during key stage 3. PSHE education reflects the fact that students are moving towards an independent role in adult life, taking on greater responsibility for themselves and others.

How PSHE is taught?

PSHE is taught in the shared curriculum time with RS as well as in Form time and in our Personal Development (PD) days.  The curriculum follows the 3 key strands of Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World in line with the statutory guidelines and the programme of study promoted by the national PSHE Association.  In form time tutors work through the more pastoral elements of the PSHE curriculum such as the transition to secondary school and post-16 institutions, healthy diet and life style choices, managing on and off line friendships, tackling stigma, coping with stress, British Values and community cohesion and employment skills.  In Lesson time we have a core of experienced staff who tackle some of the more complex issues that the curriculum covers such as sexuality and consent, mental health and emotional wellbeing, tackling relationship myths and expectations, challenging extremism and radicalisation.  The three key strands are taught in a way that the level of complexity and knowledge requirement spirals up the curriculum both repeating and reinforcing previous material and building on that knowledge in an age appropriate and often social and school contextual need.

PSHE and Promoting British Values

The PSHE curriculum underpins the DfE’s requirement to promote British Values.  By ensuring a strong form time programme alongside dedicated lesson time with all subject staff involved in the delivery we can ensure this requirement is met.  At Barlby we recognise the multi-cultural, multi-faith and ever changing nature of the UK.  We also understand the vital role we have in ensuring individuals are not subjected to intimidation or radicalisation by those wishing to unduly, or illegally influence them.  At Barlby we educate students to and follow equal opportunities guidance to guarantee there will be no discrimination against an individual or group, regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, political or financial status, or similar.

The five key British Values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs are underpinned by the school values which are throughout all elements of the curriculum but none more so than PSHE where we, through the ‘Living in the Wider World’ strand prepare students for life beyond the formal, examined curriculum ensuring that we promote and reinforce British Values to all of our students.
